Who We Are

The Institute for Human Caring

Renowned palliative care physician Ira Byock, M.D., FAAHPM founded the Institute for Human Caring in 2014 to advance goal-aligned whole person caring across the Providence health system.

Created on the belief that providing more personalized care was better business, the Institute develops tools, technologies, policies, and practices to offer healthcare that’s more aligned with the wishes of patients and their loved ones. We are guided by Providence’s core values of Compassion, Dignity, Justice, Excellence, Integrity, as well as our Promise to answer each patient’s call to “know me, care for me, ease my way.”

The Institute has grown to include more than 30 award-winning and nationally acclaimed clinical and business professionals who are helping Providence, one of the nation’s largest health systems, and other organizations, achieve the quadruple aim. We help health systems avoid the costs and pains of disjointed, transactional care and realize the deep, lasting benefits of caring for whole person through our change management methodologies. Our interdisciplinary team leverages data to research, develop, pilot and seale the tools, training and technologies needed to advance person centered care.
